Okay, I'm really grasping at straws here -- hey, we all need our coping mechanisms! -- but I wouldn't be surprised if one or two Republican Senators defected over the next few months. Lincoln Chaffee (R-RI) being the obvious candidate. I doubt Arlen Specter will ever switch sides: he owes his re-election to George W. Bush (who campaigned for him instead of hard-right Pat Toomey), and as the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, he has too much at stake to throw it all away on principle. On the other hand, a few corporate pork bills could get John McCain or Olympia Snowe or Susan Collins to go independent. Maybe. Possibly. Theoretically?
